KATARINA BARRUK (Sápmi, Sweden, Norway)

The voice of Ume Sámi

Genres: Sámi folk / Joik / Art pop

Katarina Barruk is one of the most distinctive and emotionally resonant artists in the Nordic region today. With a voice that can move from fragile intimacy to overwhelming power in a single phrase, she has become a defining musical voice from Sápmi — carrying language, history and identity into new musical landscapes.

Singing in the critically endangered Ume Sámi language, Barruk combines joik traditions with contemporary pop, orchestral arrangements and atmospheric soundscapes. The result is deeply personal and unmistakably her own: music that feels ancient and modern all at once.

Her artistry has brought her to major international stages including Roskilde, WOMEX, Reeperbahn, Iceland Airwaves and Øyafestivalen. In 2025, she made history as the first Sámi artist ever to perform at the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall alongside the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and Pekka Kuusisto.

At Tromsø World 2026, Katarina Barruk brings her full musical universe to Kulturhuset’s main stage, a concert woven from vulnerability, resistance, beauty and strength.

One of those rare performances that leaves a lasting silence in the room before the applause begins.
