South Indian traditions in full bloom

Genres: Carnatic music / South Asian classical

South of Mumbai begins another musical landscape — one shaped by some of the oldest living traditions on the Indian subcontinent. While North Indian classical music evolved through centuries of exchange with Persian and Arabic cultures, the musical traditions of South India preserved a distinctly older and deeply rooted expression known today as Carnatic music.

At Tromsø World 2026, Sør For… brings together outstanding musicians connected to this rich tradition for a concert exploring its remarkable depth, rhythmic sophistication and emotional power.

Among them is acclaimed vocalist Mira Thiruchelvam, who previously appeared at Tromsø World in 2023 with her celebrated commissioned project together with Vestnorsk Jazzensemble — a performance remembered for its powerful meeting between South Asian traditions and contemporary Nordic jazz expression.

Carnatic music is celebrated for its intricate ornamentation, breathtaking improvisation and extraordinary rhythmic complexity, but also for its warmth, openness and spiritual presence. The music moves effortlessly between meditative stillness and explosive virtuosity, creating performances that feel both intimate and expansive.

Through voice, melody and rhythm, Sør For… invites audiences into a musical world where centuries-old traditions remain vibrantly alive — constantly unfolding through interaction, listening and improvisation.

An evening of beauty, precision and deep musical conversation.

This concert is in collaboration with Samspill Music Network.
