Where Palestinian tradition meets Nordic jazz

Genres: Arabic jazz / Contemporary jazz / Tarab

At Tromsø World 2026, Palestinian singer, flutist and composer Nai Barghouti joins forces with some of the Nordic jazz scene’s most celebrated musicians for a unique and deeply exploratory collaboration.

Born in Jerusalem, Barghouti has developed an internationally acclaimed artistic voice that bridges Arabic tarab traditions with jazz improvisation and contemporary composition. Her highly ornamented and expressive vocal style which she calls “NaiStrumentation” transforms the voice into an instrument of movement, texture and emotional depth. Drawing inspiration from legendary Arab singers such as Umm Kulthoum, Fairouz and Asmahan, she creates music that feels both timeless and radically personal.

Alongside her are pianist Tord Gustavsen, one of Norway’s most renowned jazz musicians and a defining ECM artist, bassist Steinar Raknes, celebrated for his powerful and genre-crossing musicianship, and percussionist Ruven Ruppik, whose distinctive approach blends jazz, classical techniques and global rhythmic traditions.

Together, the quartet creates a musical space where Arabic musical heritage and Nordic jazz sensibilities meet in openness, improvisation and deep listening.

This is music built on trust, sensitivity and spontaneous beauty, a concert full of subtle detail and unexpected magic.

This concert is in collaboration with Tromsø-Gaza 25 years and Tromsø Jazz Club.
