Tromsø World Festival – ganavya

A Voice Like Prayer, A Presence Like Home

Prepare for a truly rare and soul-stirring experience as ganavya graces Tromsø World with her presence — an artist described by the Wall Street Journal as “among modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” and by The Guardian as a voice capable of turning stoics into “sobbing wrecks.”

Born in New York and raised in Tamil Nadu, ganavya carries a world within her — one shaped by devotional South Asian traditions, spiritual jazz, and the search for home in a fractured world. With four academic degrees (including from Berklee, UCLA and Harvard), and collaborations with luminaries like Esperanza Spalding, Shabaka Hutchings, Immanuel Wilkins, Wadad Leo Smith and Vijay, she defies every convention of what an “artist” should be — she is a singer, poet, philosopher, and ritual-maker.

Her latest album Daughter of a Temple (Leiter, 2024) is not just a record — it’s a sacred gathering, a modern-day spiritual offering created with over 40 artists, recorded in an opera house, mixed by Nils Frahm, and inspired by the cosmic visions of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. The follow-up album Nilam will be released on May 23 this year.

When ganavya performs, it is not just a concert — it is a ceremony. Her voice carries centuries of memory and longing, yet it feels as intimate as a whisper to the soul.

At Tromsø World, on October 30th, she brings her alchemy to Kulturhuset’s Lillescenen — offering us not just music, but a reminder that a village always exists somewhere, in sound, in devotion, in each other.

🕊 Come. Listen. Be transformed.
